Ox-cart ruts, river-roar, chanfana smoke: the high village where May candles climb to Arouca.

The granite slabs of the medieval bridge over the Rio Gralheira still bear the polished ruts of ox-carts. By late summer the river shrinks, revealing flat stones where women once thumped linen; after the first autumn rains the water roars and swallows the valley whole. Alvarenga sits at 505 m, high enough for cold air to tumble off the Serra da Gralheira even when the town square is drenched in sun.
Three days that anchor the year
25 May: the candlelit procession of Queen Saint Mafalda leaves the parish church at dusk and climbs the 7 km to Arouca’s monastery.
First Sunday in September: Romaria da Senhora da Laje – an outdoor mass on a schist outcrop and a priest who blesses donkeys as well as their owners.
15 August: Festa da Mó – kid goat roasted in the communal bread oven, accordion-led marches, and a strict rule: if you don’t help serve or clear, you’re not welcome next year.
What to eat
Cabrito da Gralheira IGP – order a 2 kg shoulder 48 h ahead at Talho Fonseca (€22/kg).
Arouquesa beef DOP – 3 cm-thick rib-eye, charred over bagaço-brushed embers at O Gralheira (€18/kg).
Chanfana – goat stewed in black pottery, Saturday nights only, Casa Leonilde (€14).
Honey DOP – heather and lavender notes, €8 for 500 g at the co-op on Rua da Escola.
Where to go
Mother Church – open 09:00-12:00, 14:00-17:00; gilded carving and an 18th-century altarpiece recently restored with EU funds.
Capela da Laje – 3 km of unpaved road, passable by 4×4 or on the parish’s obliging mules.
Gralheira Trail – 8 km loop, yellow blazes, starting behind the cemetery; buzzards overhead, granite wolf traps in the undergrowth.
