Full article about Rocas do Vouga: granite teeth in pine-green Vouga
Key-keeper ceilings, 12 °C black pools, Lafões veal—this is Rocas do Vouga

The EN336 climbs steadily out of Aveiro; twenty kilometres on, granite outcrops begin to perforate the meadow like broken teeth, and the Vouga River disappears under a mat of pines. This is Rocas do Vouga—literally “rocks amid the green”—a parish name tidied up in 1898 with the suffix “do Vouga” to stop lawyers sending mail to the wrong place.
Mother Church
Doors unlock at 09:00, swing shut at noon. If the iron latch is fastened, walk fifty metres uphill to Dona Guida’s house; she keeps the key in a saucer by the door. Inside, a coffered ceiling from 1787 unfolds seven episodes of the Virgin’s life—faded but still readable carmine and indigo. Feed the portable lamp with a one-euro coin; the single overhead bulb stops well short of the altar.
River Route
A tractor-wide track drops 2.5 km to the stone bridge at Pias. Allow 35 minutes down, 45 back up; early risers share the path with Arouquesa cattle grazing the wetlands. Bring water—there is no café until you hit the main road.
Where to eat
Cimo da Aldeia, on the through-road, is open year-round except Tuesdays. The €9 prato do dia runs to soup, grilled meat and espresso. If veal is chalked up, ask whether it is Lafões IGP; when deliveries fail, the kitchen falls back on defrosted roast beef.
Gresso Trail (PR10 SVV)
Ten kilometres, 400 m cumulative climb, three hours. Start by the bandstand; yellow-and-red blazes. At km 4 a short detour drops to the Poço Negro—a 15 m iron ladder into water that holds at 12 °C even in August. Phone coverage dies above the 500 m contour; cache the map offline before you set off.
