The primary school has 23 pupils; when teachers are scarce it simply shuts. The playground shelters under three cork oaks planted in 1987 – the only man-made shade in sight.

Café Central: doors open at 06h, breakfast served until 10h. Espresso 60 c, toast €1.
Tasca do João: Friday & Saturday supper only. Lamb stew €9, bread and house wine included. Book: +351 284 951 234.
Church-yard barbecue: summer Sundays, piri-piri chicken €7 from 12h until the last bird leaves the grill.

Cheese: Quinta do Peso, 3 km towards Alfundão. Knock; someone will cut you a wedge of Serpa DOP at €12/kg – cash only.

What to see (no leaflets)

Igreja matrix: unlocked Sunday mornings before 11h Mass. 18th-century azulejos, paint flaking like old lipstick.
Windmill ruins: 1 km across compacted earth; impassable after rain.
Cork oak walk: follow the farm track towards Poceirão; 45 min on foot to a tree with an 8 m girth. No waymarks – download the GPX.

When to come

March–April: plains awash with colour, 22 °C.
July–August: 40 °C in the shade; venture out only at dawn.
November: boar-hunting season, morning fog, cafés bolt the door at dusk.

At 18h the Amorim cork factory in Ferreira clocks out; Lisbon- and France-registered hatchbacks roll in. Conversations last until the café pulls its shutter at 22h, when Peroguarda slips back into the hush that digital maps still refuse to record.
