The church bell strikes twelve and the only thing that stirs in Galegos is its own echo. Round the back, a pan of caldo verde is lifting its lid and the smell of burnt logs tastes of Sunday. The parish sits on a low plateau, just 71 m above sea level, but the Atlantic is a long way off; what stretches instead are paddocks walled in granite and whitewashed houses that seem to be ducking their own roofs.

A cross that outlives generations

Galegos only swells on the day of the Festa das Cruzes. The week before, women thrash cushions against washing-lines while men pretend not to notice the funeral flowers drying in the cellar. On Sunday the procession inches down the uneven lane to the stone cross, turns, and no one swaps sides: right-flankers stay right, left-flankers stay left, as if the queue were a countryside wedding. Five hundred elders have watched this choreography fifty times; three hundred children only care whether sugared chestnuts wait at the end.

The granite cross—thirteenth or fourteenth century, no one can be bothered to check—leans against the church wall. When it rains the water sheets off the stone like a rinsed plate. There is no plaque, no QR code, just a slab that has outlasted everything, including the wind off the little airstrip at Fornelos.

Vineyards that climb the valley

Galegos lies inside the Vinho Verde demarcation, yet forget any visions of sweeping quintas. Here, back gardens hold ten vines each, wedged between cabbage rows and sweet-corn stalks. The terraces are so narrow a stout man must sidestep uphill. In September the ripe caborcas draw sparrows and neighbours: the birds peck the top bunches, the humans ferment the wine served at Christmas with a complimentary headache.

The census lists 2,848 souls, but it feels denser—every house fronts the street and every window stays wide open. You can hold a conversation without leaving your bedroom: your neighbour in her kitchen, you under your blanket, words vaulting the wall like an ill-tempered cat.

Pilgrim footprints

The Camino de Santiago enters Galegos on the old national road, though you would hardly notice. A few rucksacked walkers look lost and ask the first passer-by, “Is this already Galegos?” They refill bottles at the village fountain, prise a stone from a boot, move on. None stay for lunch. All they leave is boot-dust on the pavement, washed away by October rain.

What remains are the fields: green all year, irrigated by levadas that snake down from the Serra de Queirã. Maize grows head-high, Portuguese kale higher still, and between them the beans eaten on All Saints’ Day. From this soil comes the broth you smell on Mondays when women carry bread in a tea-towel to the man at the seeder; he eats with a wooden spoon, perched on the doorstep’s limestone lip.
