Granite surfaces at 662 m, rain-slicked and pewter-grey. Pinheiro spills down the north slope of the Serra da Cabreira in clusters of two or three houses, every front door turned east because Atlantic storms arrive from the opposite compass. Three-hundred-and-seventy-two people occupy 1,026 hectares – a density of 3.6 per km², lower than the area’s roe deer.
Pilgrimages on foot
Four processions fix the calendar: D’Orada (May), Fé (June), Lapa (August) and Conceição (December). None hires a brass band. Women climb the dirt track with wicker baskets of corn bread and litre bottles of vinho tinto; men shoulder the carved wooden litter of the Virgin. The shrine of Nossa Senhora da Lapa sits four kilometres from the tarmac; the final 800 m are polished granite slabs – pack rubber soles.
What the mountain gives
Carne Barrosã DOP: auburn cows that graze above the 600 m contour. Mr Albano’s quinta sells rib-eye for €18/kg; ring 253 361 154 the day before – he slaughters only on Thursdays.
Heather & gorse honey: harvested in August, sold by the parish co-op beside the church on Saturday mornings until 13:00. Bring a screw-top; they don’t supply jars (€12/litre).
Vinho verde: Eira do Mouro winery in Ruivães, 3 km downhill, still has citrusy 2022 white at €4. Serve at 8 °C – buy ice in Vieira do Minho because no one here owns a fridge.
Where to sleep
Fifteen houses, all listed on Booking. Highest (and priciest) is Casa do Gadanho: €120, firewood included. Budget option is a double at Quinta da Veiga for €35, sharing a bathroom with the caretaker. Breakfast isn’t provided; buy bread in Vieira do Minho, 12 km of hair-pins away.
Getting here
Leave the A11 at exit 13, follow the EN307 for 14 km; the last 5 km tighten into switchbacks. No buses – the service ceased when the driver retired 15 years ago.
What you won’t find
Pharmacy, ATM, espresso terrace. What you will find: Sr António’s bar opens at 19:00 when the milking is done, serving 50 ml of moonshine for €1.
