Caldo verde appears every Monday and Friday at the only café in Pico de Regalados. The chorizo floating in it was cut that morning from a pig you could have met the week before. At seven the church bell clangs for fieldwork; at eight it rings again for mass. On a north wind the sound carries clear across the valley to Gondiães—three metallic beats, then silence.
Three names, one parish
Since the 2013 municipal shake-up, Pico, Gondiães and Mós share a single parish council and a president who knows every dog by name. Pico keeps the social pulse: Café O Regalado, open since 1978, where the espresso is poured through a 1983 La Cimbali and the newspapers arrive a day late. Gondiães supplies the space—an oak-shaded festa field beside the 17th-century church. Mós provides the flour: two granite water-mills still turn, one for wheat bread, the other for maize broa. The road that strings them together, the EM-557, climbs only 180 m above sea level, but the view drops away to the Rio Homem so steeply that buzzards glide at eye-height. Population density is 16 people per km²; hollow stone houses outnumber occupied ones, and Lisbon licence plates appear each weekend.
What you eat and drink
September is grape month. Schools close for two weeks so children can help their parents lug baskets to the stone lagares; the free-run juice heads straight into chestnut barrels. By December the smokehouses wake up—hams hang in attic rafters, brushed first with sea salt for 90 days, then scented with oak and heather until June. The finished presunto sells for €12 a kilo at summer fairs. Dores’ goat cheese is set only on Mondays; Mr Albano’s 30 hives yield 800 kg of rosemary honey. Mid-week supper means rojões at Adega do Mós—pork shoulder seared in lard and wine—served Wednesdays and Saturdays to those who booked ahead (253 981 234).

- 15 August: Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho, Mós. Mass at 10h, procession at 11h, communal lunch under the plane trees (€10, wine included).
- Second weekend of July: Gondiães. Friday-night bingo, Saturday sardinhada (€5), Sunday mass followed by a brass-band procession through the lanes.
Getting here
Leave Braga on the A3, exit 15, follow the N103 to Vila Verde, then swing onto the EM-557. Park on Pico’s tiny praça or inside Gondiães’ festa field. No car? AVA buses from Braga reach Vila Verde in 30 min; a taxi covers the last 12 km for about €15. Walking between hamlets is possible on packed-earth trails, but carry water—there is nowhere to refill.
