The smoke that forgets to leave

Woodsmoke drifts up the flue as though it has nowhere else to be. It is Santo Estêvão, 26 December, and Alvites – a scatter of 171 souls the road atlas slides past between Mirandela and the Serra – suddenly remembers how to be loud. A fourteen-year-old knots a walnut-bark mask to his face, straps a cow-bell to his belt and yells down the lane that the law is his until Epiphany. No one argues. When the masked boys parade, even the priest quickens his step.

A land that scorches rather than freezes

Alvites sits at 471 m, halfway up a southern slope that lets the Tua valley sleep below. Winters are brief; July splits the schist. Olive trees appreciate the arrangement – they are not stupid – so the village still produces DOP olive oil and brined olives that my grandmother ferried to London in terracotta jars each December. Local chestnuts (also DOP) drop like loose change, and the ewes that become Queijo Terrincho graze within sight of the dairy. What grows here is eaten here; anything left hangs in the fumeiro above the hearth.

Depopulation is the national anthem, yet Alvites still fields thirteen knee-grazed children and sixty-three elders who send them to check the hen-house is locked. Density: 9.6 people per km² – you can shout and no neighbour will ask you to whisper.

The ham loft doubles as the village salon

The village kitchen is built for digestion, not Instagram. Hams cure so slowly they seem to be waiting for better news. The alheira – a sausage invented by fifteenth-century Jews who needed to look pork-obsessed – is bound here with maize bread and a fist of garlic. Chouriça de carne (meat, not blood) will last the year if the rats stay stupid. The communal oven still fires: António wields the peel one day, D. Rosa bakes corn broas for Sunday mass the next. No one texts; you smell burnt oak and know bread – or kid – is ready.

The Festa dos Rapazes is not folklore for hire. It is the village reminding itself that there were once more people and fewer rules. For three days the schoolboys of Vila Chã become petty monarchs. They knock on doors demanding their “facho”: a coil of smoked sausage, a two-litre garrafão of rough red, chestnuts still hot from the brazier. Doors open. Etiquette is taught early: if you want to be a man, remember you were first a boy.

When the light goes the schist glows rust and you can no longer tell bell from wind. Alvites shrinks but never silences itself: a dog disputes the dark, a tractor coughs into life, an elder predicts a long winter. A village is not its houses; it is the noise they make when we think no one is left inside.
