Baroque bells, chestnut trails and stone granaries crown this 1,027 m Bragança border haven

The church bell strikes seven, eight, nine. Twelve seconds later the mountain opposite throws the sound back, crisp and metallic, as if a second tower were ringing across the valley. At 1,027 m the air is thin enough to make a flatlander short-witted after a sprint for the bus; even in August the thermometer can scrape 8 °C at dawn, and the granite houses breathe damp until early afternoon.
Church & what to see
Igreja de Moimenta unlocks at nine, bolts again at noon. Inside, an 18-metre gilded Baroque retable glints above the nave; the 16th-century bell up in the tower still works despite three cracked clappers.
Three hundred metres south of Montouto, three arches of a medieval bridge stride into the Rio Leca. A 1934 plate records “reinforcement works”; the approach is packed earth, the car park is simply earth.
Granite espigueiros—stone granaries on stilts—dot the hillsides: 42 in Moimenta, 37 in Montouto. The longest, six metres, once belonged to the agricultural co-operative that folded in 1983.
Where to eat
Casa da Fernanda opens Tuesday-Saturday, 12-3. There is no choice: potato-and-green-bean stew (€8), home-cured chouriço (€5), chestnut cake (€2.50). Reserve a day ahead: 273 989 456.
The communal oven fires on Saturday evenings. Bring your own proved dough; the baker charges €1.50 per loaf.
Trails
Montouto loop: 8.2 km, 3 h 30 min, 420 m ascent. Yellow waymarks leave from the church square; the first four kilometres are shadeless, so carry 1.5 litres of water. GPS start: 41.9354, -6.9821.
The eastern route of the Caminho de Santiago cuts straight through the village, yellow-scallop boards nailed to chestnut trunks. The old primary school is now an albergue: ten beds, €5, key from Mr Armindo—third blue door on the left.
Snow & getting here
Municipal road 1032 is left unploughed for the final 7 km. Snow chains are compulsory on average ten days each winter; above 900 m drifts accumulate quickly. Winter 2023 saw 23 snow-days and six road closures. Vinhais fire station: 273 981 222.
