The tang of woodsmoke drifting across the valley is the first sign that Madeirã is still inhabited. Beside the only café, Joaquim scours his copper still before the arbutus-berry harvest; by late afternoon the clear, peppery firewater will drip steadily into glass demijohns at €12 a litre. Bring your own two-litre bottle and he’ll fill it after 17:00 outside the workshop door.

You climb 630 m above sea level along 7.5 km of serpentine tarmac that leaves the EN 233 near the village of Álvaro. Two blind bends demand a polite horn-blast before you edge round; the road narrows further as stone houses appear and the air cools under sweet-chestnut canopy.

Madeirã shook off Álvaro’s jurisdiction in 1732. Today 154 souls occupy 60 year-round dwellings spread across two officially named lanes: Church Street and Fountain Street. Nossa Senhora do Carmo opens at eight on Sundays, but the priest drives over from Oleiros, so Mass is pushed to 11:00 sharp. Ask the sacristan in the yellow house opposite if you want to see the carved cedar ceiling inside.

Geopark Trail

Yellow waymarks leave from the churchyard, loop 5.2 km through heather moorland and a black-schist outcrop, and finish at Sr António’s garden gate. No bar en route—carry water. GPS: 40°02'23"N 7°54'17"W.

What to Buy

Cavacas (lemon-glazed dough knots) are sold at Café O Parque—€1 for three. Order a full Bolo de Mel two days ahead (€6); the honey-and-walnut cake uses heather honey from the Serra da Estrela foothills.

Where to Sleep

Vilar dos Condes offers three guest rooms at €70 with breakfast; shutters are drawn in January.

Need to Know

The nearest pharmacy is 12 km away in Alvito da Beira; fuel is 18 km south in Oleiros. Snow is rare, but the wind can slice straight through a Barbour. On the Caminho de Santiago, ignore the snapped yellow arrow and follow red electrical-tape flags until you reach the medieval stone bridge.
