The road lifts away from the River Alva and, just before the single-lane bridge into Folques, verges are piled with roof-slate wedges: winter firewood, not ornament. At 334 m the air thins slightly; 342 people live here and only António decides when coffee is served. The church stays locked; ask at the third house on the left – D. Amélia keeps the key in her apron pocket.

What to see

The granite granary on Largo do Cruzeiro is the only building with listed status. Everything else is everyday spectacle: dry-stone walls knitted without mortar, chimney plumes of birch and oak, the cobbled CM 514 that dissolves into a dirt track three kilometres east. Walking on to Soito? Carry water – there is no spring in between.

Where to eat

António’s counter offers espresso for €0.60 and cured Serra da Estrela cheese sandwiches – that is the entire repertoire. On Sunday at noon the communal oven exhales lamb; bring your own joint and you’ll be invited to share. Orchards rise above the village; the local apples bruise at the first bump, so eat them in situ.

Where to sleep

Thirteen private houses are licensed by Turismo de Portugal, €60–€80 a night. None has reception; keys are dropped via WhatsApp. The oldest, Casa da Ponte, still draws its hot water from a back-boiler under a chestnut-wood fire – if the wind hasn’t toppled the power line again.

When to go

May: strawberry-tree blossom and rain-free ridewalks. October: chestnuts roasting, cafés shutter at eight. Skip August – the thermometer kisses 38 °C and smoke rises from the opposite slope.

Vital statistics

144 pensioners, 25 children. The GP holds surgery Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the white house marked 18. Nearest pharmacy: 18 km in Arganil. EDP cuts power two or three times a month; if you rely on an electric pump, fill the bath when the lights flicker.
