By seven o’clock the air is already laced with woodsmoke, rising from chimneys that keep the granite walls of Seixo da Beira permanently damp from October to April. The parish sits at 353 m on the northern lip of the Mondego basin, its 1,369 inhabitants strung across 33 km² of gorse-covered knolls and olive terraces; Carril and Vila Franca da Beira are only ten minutes apart by car, but the lane wriggles like a dropped ribbon.

What the map omits

Seven houses take paying guests. Lamb and kid come from local herds, not the Serra da Estrela flocks advertised elsewhere. At the village grocery on the N17, cured Serra da Estrela DOP cheese is usually gone by 9 a.m.; arrive later and you’ll be offered the factory version. Sweet requeijão seldom survives Monday morning. A framed Geopark Estrela certificate hangs in the parish council office, yet the real amenities are simpler: hot showers at the football ground (ask the snack-bar owner for the key) and patchy Wi-Fi everywhere.

Where to eat

  • O Céu: the only restaurant. Order chanfana (goat stewed in red wine) 48 hours ahead; closed Tuesdays.
  • Café da Vila: torresmo (crisp pork-belly) baps appear at 11 a.m. and vanish within the hour.
  • Quinta do Fontelo: call 238 677 123 to taste Dão reds poured straight from the tank; €4 a bottle.

Walking without signal

The Seixo stream trail is 5 km of yellow blazes beginning behind the church; you’ll ford the water three times, so pack wellies. The 3 km haul to Carril gains 300 m, delivering a front-row seat over the Estrela ridge, but the wind is knife-sharp even in midsummer.

When to go

May–June: heather in bloom, 20 °C afternoons. October: apple orchards turning ochre, brief showers. August brings river mosquitoes and convoys of motorbikes. Nights end at 9 p.m. when the café shutters close. Bring a raincoat, a power bank and a full tank—there’s no Uber, no taxi rank, and the nearest pharmacy is 15 km away in Oliveira do Hospital.
