What’s there
Gruta do Escoural
The only cave in Portugal with Palaeolithic paintings – horses, bovids and abstract strokes brushed and chiselled 20,000 years ago.
Visits are strictly by guided tour, booked 48 h ahead (266 896 551).
Tues & Thu, 10–12 / 14–16; €6; 45 min.
The chamber stays a cool 17 °C year-round; bring a jumper.
Parking beside the entrance; narrow steps and uneven floors exclude wheelchairs.
Igreja Matriz de Santiago
Unlocked only on Sunday before the 11.30 mass.
Otherwise knock at the blue-door house, second left past the café, and D. Alice will fetch the key.
No brochures, no guides – just an 18th-century gilded altarpiece and a weather-worn Manueline cross that has watched over this granite ridge since the Age of Discovery.
Where to eat
Café O Escoural on the EN114 dispenses machine espresso and crisp tostadas from 07.30 (closed Mon) – the parish’s sole public table.
For lunch, drive 18 km to Montemor-o-Novo:
- Tasquinha do Zé – chalkboard prato do dia €9, seasonal Serra d’Ossa trout.
- Café Central – terrace with Wi-Fi, presunto de barrancos sandwich €4.
Where to sleep
Casa do Forno, a stone cottage for four, €90 night.
Reserve via WhatsApp (+351 969 842 117).
No breakfast provided; the nearest mini-market opens Wed & Fri till 13.00 in Santiago village, 2 km away.
GPS 38.5311, -8.2047; the final 800 m is smooth dirt, fine for a low-slung car.
Short walks
Trilho dos Moinhos – 5 km yellow-blazed loop from the cave, dropping to the Minde stream and three roofless water-mills.
Carry water; no fountains.
Dogs welcome, but keep them close – Montado pigs snuffle among the cork oaks.

Montemor-o-Novo station, 20 min by road, has two daily trains to Lisbon (1 h 45) and Évora (20 min).
No public bus reaches Escoural; a local taxi charges €20 each way.
Fuel up before you arrive – the nearest garage is the 24 h Repsol in Montemor.
