1. Data Sources
Our goal is to help you discover the parishes (freguesias) of Portugal with practical and verifiable information. Content may include data from the following public bodies and official portals:
Instituto Nacional de Estatistica -- population, census data and official statistics.
Heritage, tourist routes, accommodation classifications and points of interest.
Direcao-Geral das Autarquias Locais -- official administrative divisions and municipal data.
Instituto Portugues do Mar e da Atmosfera -- climate data and weather information.
Direcao-Geral do Patrimonio Cultural -- classified cultural heritage and monuments.
Instituto da Conservacao da Natureza e das Florestas -- natural parks and protected areas.
Portuguese Open Data Portal -- reusable public datasets.
Structured open data -- heritage classifications, geographic data and administrative relationships.
Collaborative geographic data -- elevation, coordinates and mapping information.
Parish photographs under Creative Commons licences, always with attribution to the original author.
Where possible, we link to the original source. Other public open sources are cited when used.
2. Methodology & Automation
We process and structure public information to present it in a more useful and accessible way. To achieve this across more than 3,000 parishes, we use automation and artificial intelligence tools at various stages:
- Research: Automated gathering and cross-referencing of data from multiple official sources to build comprehensive parish profiles.
- Content generation: AI language models assist in writing editorial articles in Portuguese, which are then reviewed and adapted for English and Spanish.
- Quality checks: Automated scripts detect broken links, validate data consistency, flag cliches and verify factual accuracy against source data.
- Image curation: AI-assisted selection and quality assessment of Creative Commons photographs from Flickr.
