What’s left of the village
At 797 m the cold settles in before seven. Valezim stays folded inside its own fog until the sun re-draws the granite outlines; until then only the church bell counts the morning, the rest is hush. Walls are the colour of uncut stone, whitewash daubed between the joints; the pavement tilts and buckles—no one has planed it for tourist feet.
Royal charter in 1201, borough status revoked 1855. Today the head-count is 243, almost half past retirement age. The old câmara building is now a day centre for the elderly; “Municipal Chamber” is still readable above the door. Latin vallecinus—small valley—fits: 12 km², two streets, three cafés, done.
Pasture, smokehouse, cheese
Inside Serra da Estrela Natural Park. Cattle and sheep graze freely, yellow ear-tags glinting. Borrego Serra da Estrela DOP and Cabrito da Beira IGP begin life on these meadows; buy direct from the farmer and you’ll pay a fifth less than in Guarda. Back-yard smokehouses cure black-pork chouriço for sixty days—bring €20 notes, card machines don’t exist. Serra da Estrela DOP cheese: €14 a kilo at Queijaria do Cabeço, open 10-12 / 15-18, closed Tuesdays.
The one day it changes
First Sunday in September, Nossa Senhora da Saúde. A human chain of worshippers leaves the mother church at nine, processes to the old threshing floor where a communal lunch is laid—€12 with Dão wine. Park before eight or be prepared to hike the last two kilometres up the M566.
Where to sleep & walk
Seven village houses rent rooms—45 beds in total. Casa do Vidoeiro: €70 for the cottage, wood-stove included, book 48 h ahead (961 234 567). PR4 “Valezim–Rio Alvoco” is an 8-km loop with 350 m of climb, yellow waymarks; carry 1.5 l—no springs. GPS wavers at the Loriga ford; download the track from Geopark Estrela.
On a moonless night the sky drops to magnitude 6.5, Bortle class 3. Switch the house lights off, wait fifteen minutes: the Milky Way unfurls above the cemetery wall like a private screening.
