Pedreiras was hacked from the ground. For centuries the limestone paid the bills here, echoing out of the quarry face and across the Serra de Aire. Then the drills fell silent, leaving only scars—and stone, everywhere: in cottage walls, in the cobbles polished by clogs, in the 156-metre-high cliff that greets the morning sun. The parish numbers 2,548 souls spread over 13 square kilometres, a thumbnail at the gate of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park.

What the quarries became

Excavations ceased in the late 1990s; now ferns colonise the benches and orange lichens bloom on abandoned blocks. Every alternate summer the disused Codaçal pit—technically over the boundary in Serro Ventoso—turns into an open-air gallery for Stone Art, inviting sculptors and muralists to carve directly into the limestone walls. No tickets, no guides, no gift shop: just rock, rain and wind erasing the work until the next cohort arrives. Pin your map to 39.5671, -8.8892 and scramble up the spoil heap for the best vantage.

What to eat

Olive oil stamped DOP Ribatejo comes from the groves south of the ridge; look for cold-pressed Cobrançosa. Pêra Rocha do Oeste and Alcobaça apples—both protected by EU labels—line the wooden crates at O Cantinho grocery, 42 Rua Principal (Mon–Sat 9–12.30, 14–19). Ask for a slice before you commit; the pear should snap like celery.

Getting here

From Lisbon: A1 to Leiria, then N1/N356; 138 km, 90 min. From Porto: A1 to Albergaria, A17 to Leiria, same regional roads; 178 km, 1 hr 50. Buses terminate at Porto de Mós; a taxi adds 15 min and €20.

A day in the life

At 7.30 Café Central lifts its shutters; a custard tart and a milky espresso cost €1.55 together. By 8.15 the primary-school gate has swallowed 37 children. Evening sees men perched on wall-tops debating Sporting’s back four, and at 8 p.m. sharp Serras restaurant ladles lamb stew for exactly 12 covers—reserve on +351 244 491 200.
