Day trips from Viseu
Viseu is an elegant city on the Beira Alta plateau, surrounded by Dao vineyards and granite landscapes. Its cathedral, the Grão Vasco Museum and the pedestrianised historic centre make it one of Portugal's most pleasant district capitals — and the ideal base to explore an authentic interior.
Dao vineyards and Lafoes
The Dao region, south and east of Viseu, is one of Portugal's oldest wine-producing areas. The parishes between Nelas, Mangualde and Penalva do Castelo hide centuries-old estates among granite boulders and pine forests. Dao reds, full-bodied and elegant, are the perfect match for roast kid and Beira-style veal.
Hills and granite villages
The Caramulo and Gralheira ranges border the district to the west, with villages perched among chestnut trees and water meadows. Vouzela, with its thermal springs and Romanesque heritage, and Castro Daire, gateway to Montemuro, reveal a Portugal of granite, schist and running water.
Practical tip
The Viseu plateau has cold winters and hot but dry summers. The grape harvest (September–October) is the best time to visit — quintas open their doors, every village holds a festival and the landscape turns gold. Serra da Estrela cured cheese, bought directly from the shepherd, is an experience worth the journey.
