By late afternoon the granite slabs of Alpalhão’s main square radiate stored heat like a storage heater. Claim one of the benches under the bandstand – the only shaded seating in town – and watch the light drop behind the Serra de São Miguel. The castle keep opens on demand, but only if the mayor of Nisa is in the mood; telephone +351 274 480 600 the same morning. The spiral stair is medieval-narrow; leave toddlers at the bottom and savour the 360-degree roof terrace over ochre rooftops and olive terraces.

Getting there & parking

Exit the A23 at junction 22 (Nisa/Alpalhão) and thread 14 km of empty municipal road – the last petrol is behind you. The square beside the bandstand takes 30 cars free of charge; there is no bus service.

One slow afternoon

  1. Castle – five-minute climb, views west to the Serra.
  2. Igreja Matriz – 9-12h, 14-17h. A Manueline retable frames the high altar.
  3. Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição – ask for the key at “O Cantinho” grocery on Rua de Baixo.

Where to eat

“O Alpendre” opens Fri–Sat dinner only, book on 274 480 123. Lamb stew for two (€24) arrives in a terracotta dish with unlabelled house red served from a jug. For Nisa DOP sheep’s-milk cheese, drive 3 km towards town and pull in at Queijaria Alpalhão (€14/kg; 9-18h, closed Sun afternoon).

Walks

PR2 Alpalhão – Castle loop: 4.2 km, 1 h 30, yellow markers; carry water – no café.
Portela de Almourão geosite: 8 km of graded dirt, high-clearance useful. Trilobite fossils glint in the Ordovician schist.

Where to sleep

Casa do Castelo – two-bedroom cottage with fireplace, €80/night, two-night minimum. [email protected]
Alpaca Rooms – farmhouse 3 km out, double €55 with breakfast; pets welcome. 927 345 678

Calendar

12-13 Dec: Christmas market in the sports hall, free entry, 10-19h.
15 Aug: Assumption procession at 21h, fireworks over the industrial estate at 23h.
