The church bell strikes 7:30 sharp. Until nine, fog pools in the Tâmega valley 210 m below, softening the terraces of Loureiro and Arinto vines that cloak 480 of Tabuado’s 680 hectares. Only 1,336 people live here, strung along the N101 that scissors the parish east–west.
What to see
Three monuments huddle within a three-minute stroll: the 18th-century parish church, its rococo façade freshly scrubbed; the Manueline Capela de São Sebastião, all twisted ropes and armillary spheres; and an 18th-century granite cross whose shadow stretches like a sundial across the cobbles. All are unlocked when the sacristan feels like it—if not, ring the parish council on 255 532 276 and someone ambles over with a key.
Where to eat
Tasca do Júlio serves midday-only Minho-style pork belly (€9) and nothing else; closed Tuesdays. Café Central does toasted sandwiches (€3) and icy Super Bock (€1.20) from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Vegetarians should head elsewhere.
What to drink
The Adega Cooperativa de Marco de Canaveses pours vinho verde by appointment (255 523 310). Take-home bottles €3–€5.
Honey
DOP Terras Altas do Minho honey: €6/kg from Sr. Armindo at no. 23 Rua da Igreja, or from the bee co-op on the Sande road (second right after the cemetery). Bring a jar if you want runny honey straight from the hive—July and August only.
Festivals
São João, 23–24 June: sardines charred in the church square (€2), bonfire at 12:30 a.m.
Festas do Marco: last weekend of August, with fairground stalls open until 4 a.m.; free parking on the football pitch.
Sleep
Four village houses list on Booking, averaging €60 a night. No hotel; the municipal campsite closed in 2019.
Getting here
Transdev bus from Porto: three daily (7 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 6 p.m.; no Sunday service), 1 h 10 min, €4.55.
By car: A4 exit 17, then 12 km on the EN319. Fuel at the Repsol on the N101, 7 a.m.–10 p.m.
