At 325 m, Cristelo’s pink granite houses soak up the sun all afternoon and release it slowly; even at midnight you’ll still be comfortable in a T-shirt. Dawn is another story – mist rolls off the Sousa valley, so bring a fleece if you’re an early riser.
Getting there
41 km east of Porto. Take the A11 to Penafiel, then the N211. No public transport – you’ll need a car.

- O Cantinho, Rua da Igreja 12: €9 lunch menu, house wine poured freely.
- Café Central, Largo do Município: €2 ham-and-cheese tosta, 7 am–7 pm, closed Monday.
Buy
Padaria Santos: corn bread out of the wood oven at 8 am and 4 pm. Cash only.

Walk
Trilho dos Fumeiros: 4 km yellow-marked loop past smoking sheds where chouriços hang like bats. Closed shoes essential – loose scree on the descent.

15 August: Nossa Senhora da Assunção procession, caldo-verde stalls (€3 a bowl). Park at the village entrance – lanes are single-track.
