The chapel bell strikes at seven, noon and seven again
No electric motor – the sacristan still hauls the rope by hand. At 210 m above sea-level the dawn air in Friastelas is viscous; in April the dew soaks canvas shoes before the kettle has boiled. The parish covers 391 ha, half given to vined terraces, the rest to rough pasture and blue-gum plantations.
Population
430 souls, according to the 2023 parish roll. Two houses hold a local-lodging licence: “Casa do Celeiro” (six beds, pool) and “Recanto da Vinha” (four beds, granite fireplace). Both shut from November to March for want of guests.
Walking the Camino
The Central and Litoral routes kiss on the municipal road 525 outside Bar O Ponto. Yellow arrows on the kerbstones point west; a blue arrow signals the Nascente variant. From the crossroads it is 8 km and 120 m of gentle ascent into Ponte de Lima – two unhurried hours. There is no inn, no chemist here; the nearest pharmacy is 4 km away in Arcozelo.
Bertiandos Lagoons
Drive 3 km of tarmac, then 1 km of graded earth to the park gates (open 08:00-19:00; €1). The short boardwalk loop (2 km, 45 min) ends at a bird-hide with a binocular slot. Pack repellent: mosquitoes own the reserve from June to September.
Eat & Drink
The village café charges €0.65 for an espresso and €2.00 for a ham bica-bap. Hours: 07:00-13:00, 15:00-19:00; closed Monday. Dinner means a 10-minute dash to Ponte de Lima. On Thursday mornings the white van from Arouca arrives at 09:00 with vacuum-packed Carne Barrosã – bring a cool-bag; when it’s gone, it’s gone.
Wine
Ponte de Lima’s cooperative winery opens for pre-booked visits (48 h notice, +351 258 942 124). A three-glass tasting is €5, refundable against a bottle. Harvest is mid-September; volunteers need their own secateurs and gloves.
Festa
15 August – Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte. Mass at 11:00, procession at 17:00, then a single-course outdoor supper of onion soup and roast veal with vinho verde (€12; tickets at the parish council until the 10th). Vegetarians will go hungry.
Getting here & away
Rodonorte bus 105 (Ponte de Lima–Viana do Castelo) stops in Friastelas three times on weekdays; nothing at weekends. Fare to Ponte de Lima: €1.95, cash to the driver. A taxi from the county town costs €12 (phone +351 258 942 222). Vodafone still edges out other networks in the northern half of the parish; everyone else hunts for a signal.
