A lichen-flecked Roman milestone squats in the roadside grit 840 m above sea level, half-way up the hair-pin to Fervidelas. No one can say for certain where the lost forts of Praesidium or Caladunum once stood, yet lorry drivers still glance at the granite block while hauling pine trunks deeper into the Barroso hills. The wind never drops; it carries the sour-sweet pong of manure and resin.
What to see
Solar dos Queridos: an 18th-century manor whose coat-of-arms is dissolving back into the stone. Ask for the key at the village tavern—someone will point you to Sr. Querido’s porch. Santa Maria de Viade unlocks at 09:00 on Sundays for plain-chant echoing off whitewashed walls. Below the bridge of brutalist concrete, a metal gate (permanently ajar) opens onto the Regavão valley’s Roman necropolis: twenty tombs chiselled straight into the schist.
Fifteen minutes from Fervidelas’ communal laundry tank, a 30 m waterfall slams into granite. In January the spray freezes into organ-pipes of ice—crampons advised. Continue upwards and the “rock castle” appears, a tor that lets you peer south over Gerês—unless a 16:00 fog has already erased the horizon.
Where to eat
Every house is a smokehouse. Alheira de Barroso (PGI) costs €18 a kilo at Quinta da Tapada—phone first (961 234 567). December is the only month for chouriço de abóbora, a pumpkin-spiced sausage; order two days ahead at Casa das Quintas (927 456 789). O Cacito, on the N308, serves lunch Monday-Saturday: roast kid €14, Maronesa beef stew €12. Book ahead (276 510 190).
Walking
Cascata Trail: 3 km, 1 h 30 min, 200 m climb. Start at Fervidelas cemetery, follow yellow blazes. Pisões reservoir: 5 km of compacted earth from Viade de Baixo—tractor-rutted and off-limits after rain. Caminho Nascente: yellow arrows and scallop shells lead 12 km to Montalegre castle. Mobile signal is Meo-only; expect three dead spots at 41.8278, -7.7894.

Be prepared
Night temperatures drop to –5 °C in January; even August evenings hover around 8 °C. Viade’s lone grocery opens 08:00-20:00, closed Sunday. The nearest petrol is 14 km away in Montalegre. After kilometre-marker 11 your sat-nav will panic—ignore it, keep following the brown sign to “Fervidelas” and stay on the tarmac.
