What to see

Mamoa de Alto das Madorras
A 14-metre Neolithic tumulus, 4,000–5,000 years old, rises like a green whale-back through the gorse. Park at the cross-track 2 km out of the village (41.4136, –7.4503) and walk the last 200 m; no ticket booth, no audio guide, just skylarks.

Castro de Castelo dos Mouros
From the church, a yellow-blazed footpath climbs 130 m in 20 minutes to Iron-Age ramparts that curl around the granite like a stone necklace. Below, the Tinhela corkscrews through vineyards; the light turns butterscotch after 5 pm.

Roman lagares
Three granite olive presses from the 2nd century BC – one in Sr Armindo’s farmyard, two more on the lane to Vilarinho da Castanheira. Ask for “as pilhas dos romanos” and someone will lift the gate.

Medieval necropolis
Beside the boarded-up primary school, two coffin-shaped tombs are chiselled straight into the bedrock, 13th-century and still roofed with moss.

Where to drink

Village fountains run year-round. The prettiest is Fonte de Santiago, 500 m north along the chestnut-shaded lane – cup your hands under the spout and the water tastes of snowmelt and granite.

Where to eat

Café O Cantinho opens at seven for tractor drivers and shuts at eight for the news. Grilled bifana pork is €2.50, coffee 60 cents, and the ham is from Vinhais, smoked over holly wood.

What to take home

Trás-os-Montes olive oil (DOP) – grassy, peppery, €7 a litre from the co-op in Vila Real. Maronesa beef (DOP) from Murça butcher, €12/kg. A whole Vinhais ham (IGP) from Quinta do Sr Joaquim – phone first, €25/kg.

Walks

Tinhela Trail – 8 km, three hours, river-left bank from the single-arched Roman bridge, way-marked with yellow ribbon. Kingfishers, otter prints, zero shade.

Castro Loop – 2 km out-and-back to the hillfort; take water, the sun reflects off the stone like polished pewter.

Essentials

Population 416, median age 65. Nearest pharmacy and petrol: Murça, 12 km. No ATM – bring cash.
