Two villages, one recent history

Águas Boas and Forles were stapled together in 2013 during Portugal’s nationwide parish merger. Before that, each hamlet kept its own rhythms. Águas Boas – literally “Good Waters” – earned its name from the mountain springs that once quenched transhumant shepherds and, later, the families who terraced the slopes for rye and vines. Forles, a scatter of schist houses one ridge over, belonged until 1834 to the extinct municipality of Ferreira de Aves; you can still trace the old boundary stones on a 9-kilometre circular walk mapped by the local mountaineering club.

Today 227 souls occupy 15.85 km² – a population density lower than the Scottish Highlands. Ageing is the dominant demographic: 105 residents are over 65, only 14 under 14. The silence between dwellings is not picturesque; it is the audible thinning of a culture.

The bridge that holds the line

In February 2024 engineers reopened the iron-deck bridge on the EM-581 after a year-long retrofit. No ribbon-cutting ceremony, just a new crash barrier and fresh tarmac. Yet the symbolism is hard to miss: the span is the single vehicular artery linking the parish to Sátão town seven kilometres downstream. Stand on the parapet at dawn and the River Vouga slides beneath you, winter-brown and loud, shrinking in August to a gin-clear trout highway where you can watch Salmo trutta hold station over polished granite.

High-altitude Dão

These slopes sit at the eastern extreme of the Dão PDO, planted at 750–830 m – almost the ceiling for commercial viticulture in Portugal. The growing season is short; diurnal swings can top 20 °C, locking acidity into Touriga Nacional and Jaen. There are no tasting lodges, no gift-shop corkscrews. Instead, small holders sell their grapes to the Sátão co-op or ferment in open stone lagares for family consumption. The resulting reds show a tell-tale graphite edge, a scent of crushed bay and wet rock that you will not find in the valley-floor wines around Viseu.

Where to stay – and why you might have the place to yourself

Tourism infrastructure amounts to one registered country house – a converted espigueiro with under-floor heating and views across the Caramulo massif. Wake to wood-smoke and a rooster whose sense of time is set to the first light over the Serra da Estrela, 60 km east. There are no queues, no curated itineraries, no Instagram geotag. Just the sound of a diesel tractor climbing through third gear, and the mountain deciding, unhurried, what kind of day it will be.
