What to see

The 07:23 departure from Aveiro is the earliest of only three daily trains that still rattle along Portugal’s last metre-gauge line. Sit on the left for the long 180° sweep of the Vouga at Carvalhal da Portela, announced three minutes ahead by the guard’s whistle. Get off at Valongo do Vouga (€2.35) and walk uphill to the 18th-century Igreja Matriz de São Pedro; its bell still rings at 10:45 on Sundays, calling a congregation of barely fifty souls. A lane behind the church leads to the Castro do Marnel, a pre-Roman walled settlement laid out on three granite platforms; the view stretches south to the Caramulo ridge. Two kilometres east, the whitewashed Capela de São Marcos stands unlocked, a single votive lamp burning above the valley floor.

Where to swim

Follow the N333 out of Brunhido until the tarmac gives way to a red-earth track. At the bottom of the gorge the river narrows into the Garganta de Brunhido, a string of basins deep enough for a plunge even in August. Picnic tables and spotless barbecues are shaded by alders; arrive before noon to claim one of the fifteen free parking spaces.

Where to eat

Corn-and-wheat bread emerges from the wood oven at Padaria da Veiga at 11:30 and again at 16:30; the afternoon batch sells out within twenty minutes. Taberna O Vouga in Aguieira serves a €9 lunch of soup, chanfana (goat stewed in red wine) for two, dessert and bottom-up jug wine—reserve on +351 234 123 456. At Quinta do Ribeiro you refill your own bottle from the cask for €3; bring the empties back and it’s €2.

Caminho de Santiago

The Portuguese Central Route crosses the medieval bridge at Brunhido and enters Valongo beneath a canopy of eucalyptus. The parish church will stamp credentials on request; failing the sacristan, try café O Apito beside the station. The nearest albergue, Casa do Caminho, is 4 km on in Doze Ribeiras—twelve bunks, shared kitchen, €10.

Festivals

23–24 June: Festas da Vila in the main square. Half-kilo portions of suckling pig, €12; fireworks at midnight.
15 August: Romaria da Areosa. Procession at 16:00, sardines on paper plates for €2 afterwards.
First Sunday in October: Feira do Fumeiro in Aguieira. Rice morcela €8/kg; toucinho-do-céu pastries €1 each.

Useful

Pharmacy: Rua Dr Neto Brandão 14, Mon–Fri 09:00–19:00, Sat 09:00–13:00.
Health centre: appointments on +351 234 567 890, weekdays 08:00–20:00.
