Classified heritage in Portugal
National Monuments
Portugal has over 4,000 classified immovable properties under the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC). National Monuments (MN) represent the highest level of protection — buildings and sites of exceptional importance for Portuguese identity. This selection features the parishes with the greatest concentration of classified heritage.
Listed Buildings of Public Interest
Beyond National Monuments, there are Buildings of Public Interest (IIP) and Buildings of Municipal Interest (IIM). Many rural parishes preserve heritage that in larger countries would go unnoticed — Romanesque chapels, medieval bridges, pillories, stone crosses and centuries-old fountains.
How to explore
Each parish page includes information about classified heritage in the area. Parishes are sorted by number of monuments, from the richest to the most discreet. Start with the major historic centres and discover the villages where history hides around every corner.
