Protected areas in Portugal
Peneda-Geres National Park
Portugal's only national park spans the municipalities of Arcos de Valdevez, Melgaco, Ponte da Barca, Terras de Bouro and Montalegre. Iberian wolves, Garrano horses and granite villages where time seems to stand still. The parishes in this area are among the most authentic in the country.
Natural Parks
From Serra da Estrela to the Southwest Alentejo coast, from Montesinho to Arrabida, Portugal has over 30 protected areas managed by the ICNF. Each one shelters parishes where nature is an essential part of daily life — hiking trails, clean rivers, wildlife and landscapes that have changed little over centuries.
Ria Formosa and Costa Vicentina
In the south, the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park protect some of Europe's most spectacular coastal landscapes. The parishes between the salt marshes and the cliffs combine preserved nature with the traditional fishing life of the Algarve.
